Under two years ago Canada and the United States were getting along and getting ahead at a mutually productive level. America came up with a concept of “outsourcing” a couple decades ago and that knit our two countries together in a mutually dependent way.
And then, what has been categorically proven to be a lie introduced to justify imposing tariffs under a strategy of bringing the manufacturing component of that flawed outsourcing strategy. A single simple lie about fentanyl pouring in from Canada introduced the first 25% tariff.
Now, from my point of view the concept itself was flawed at the outset. The government in America wanted to generate revenue and led the masses to believe that those tariffs would be paid by Canada and the beat has gone on every day since. Reality could have and should have told them that facts existed that literally defined tariffs as a “tax” on the consumer. They are paid by the company importing the goods and passed on down the chain to the American consumer.
This is the great “Bait and Switch” shuffle that is uniquely American. Big bluster and public stare consistently showing minimal real results. I’ve been blogging for years about how everything dumps down onto the consumer but the Trump regime socially conditioned the people sufficiently for many of them to overlook the obvious that was right there at their fingertips.
So for over a year now Donald Trump has been offending Canadians as well as the rest of the world and America by imposing tariffs under the guise of making the originating country pay that money. Billions of dollars were appearing in the government’s coffers from countries all over the world and fortunately thanks to the CUSMA trade Agreement Canadians dodged the burden but paid in lost jobs due to Canadian goods being tariffed 25%, 50% or whatever Donald Trump felt appropriate on the day.
Well, the news is not all bad and when it is news on a literal war (economic leading to military) not all bad is actually good news.
The harassment and insults by not only Donald Trump calling for Canada to become the 51st State but from his entire government, ambassador and corrupt judges and broadcasters has continued to escalate for over a year now and only by the grace of Prime Minister Mark Carney are we on more solid ground than what we were facing a year ago.
Today I want to talk about the not all bad situation in which we find ourselves today June 8th, 2026. The key first point is that of this date we have replaced a staggering 85% of the trade that the tariffs choked in America. That is huge especially when we see last month we also led the G7 and America in jobs created and the facts are that this is totally a result of Prime Minister Mark Carney.
So let’s go back to the beginning when the trade tensions first surfaced. Canada had foolishly walked itself into an unfair trade relationship with America who now was imposing strong arm tactics to raise money to show Americans how well their government was doing but hiding the fact that those tariffs were actually being paid by them!
The entire auto sector, lumber industry agriculture, energy all deeply tied to and dependent on American demand. Then came steel and aluminum and of all things uranium (their naval fleets are nuclear and we supply their fuel!).
First we fought back with counter tariffs, dollar for dollar, sector for sector. This was a message to Washington as well as to Canadian voters that this government was not about to roll over. I saw it as a call for Canadians to unite like the had around World War II but it seems Canadians were too busy dealing with their day to day living.
Immediately we started aggressively pursing trade diversification and what that shows is the opening of a whole new phase in Canadian history where Canada for the first time stood up for itself against its neighbour whom had bullied and dominated in negotiations for years.
We became a business owner with only one client. The client was huge and immediately at our doorstep. We had natural resources and serviced their outsourcing strategy and they constantly negotiated one-sided trade deals as a result. Canada was lazy and took the easy route and that had cost us but for decades we were too timid to do anything else.
But the moment that the client started becoming unreasonable unreliable, when tariffs turned that once comfortable partnership into a battle zone, we suddenly had the motivation and the political will to do something we had put off for decades. Find new clients, build new relatationships, and diversify the revenue stream.
Canadian trade missions accelerated across Europe, Asia, and Latin America. A comprehensive economic and trade agreement with European Union that had been setting for years suddenly regained traction. We entered export contracts with Germany, France, and the Netherlands. Canada / UK trade continuity agreement provided another avenue. And in the Indo-Pacific, Canada began pushing harder into relationships with Japan, South Korea and Australia.
The bottom line is that the trade gap caused Donald Trumps tariffs resulted in just a 15% loss of business like usual. All the false public statement alleging “Canada being hostile, allowing massive flows of Fentanyl into America, by not only Trump but his Administration, ambassador, and other henchmen have been relentless. But miraculously Canada boasted the best economic stats in the G7 and boasted 80,000 new jobs while America is down.
The sectors leading this recovery are somewhat a surprise. Energy exports particularly liquified natural gas and oil, have found new interest from European buyers who are desperate to reduce their dependency on Russian supply. And we are no longer selling at discount prices to America.
So, to “tell it like it is” Prime Minister Carney has done an absolutely remarkable job of protecting us everyday Canadians. The true tragedy here is the disappointing game being perpetuated by our own people who have chosen to be Conservatives (whatever that means)!
I see the roll presently being played by Mr. Poilievre and the Conservative Party as inexcusable, destructive to our leader at a time where all his time, energy and personal resources must be focused on protecting the interests of the everyday Canadian people. I see this rival thing connected to the party system as counterproductive and frankly just downright stupid.
And when I see the lies constantly spewing from their Leader wholeheartedly supported and egged on by the party while in Parliament wasting our Prime Ministers time correcting their intentional misstatements is simply too much! This has to stop and stop right now.
I may start my own part call the Other party as election ballots usually say other and solicit all non-noting Canadians to register a vote for the other party so the everyday Canadian taxpayer can literally shape the frivolity that is this two or three or so party system.
This is all fact based material gleaned through artificial intelligence and my streetwise eye. I just want Canada to wake up to the reality around us all and have them stop relying on conventional news sources for their news. The real news is right here at simplycharles.com
